“My whole ambition in life is to set in motion a machinery which will bring noble ideas to the door of everybody, and then let men and women settle their own fate. Let them know what our forefathers as well as other nations have thought on the most momentous questions of life.”

For a complete civilization the world is waiting, waiting for the treasures to come out of India, waiting for the marvelous spiritual inheritance of that race, which, through decades of degradation and misery, the nation has still clutched to her breast. The world is waiting for that treasure; little do you know how much of hunger and of thirst there is outside of India for these wonderful treasures of our forefathers. We talk here, we quarrel with each other, we laugh at and we ridicule everything sacred, till it has become almost a national vice to ridicule everything holy. Little do we understand the heart-pangs of millions waiting outside the walls, stretching forth their hands for a little sip of that nectar which our forefathers have preserved in this land of India.”

-Swami Vivekananda

It behoves us, therefore, to reverentially study the glorious spiritual heritage of our own country before we can distribute ‘that nectar’ to others. This Institution Deemed-to-be-University established by Ramakrishna Mission in the hallowed name of Swami Vivekananda feels that it is its bounden duty to expose and sensitize the present generation of Indians to the spiritual and cultural heritage of India.

"We must also remember that the leaders of our societies have never been either generals or kings, but Rishis. ..The Rishi ... is not an ordinary man, but a Mantra-drashtâ. He is a man who sees religion, .... actual realization, a coming face to face with truths which transcend the senses. "

"Ramakrishna - Vivekananda - these two lives are the unity of India. All that is necessary is that India should keep them in her heart" Yet again shall come the great re-establishment of Dharma, when the whole of this nation shall be united together, not in a common weakness, not in a common misfortune or grievance, but in a great, overflowing, complex, actual, ever-strong, ever-living consciousness of the common nationality, the common heritage, the common struggle, aye! the common destiny and the common hope"

Life and Teaching

Whoever sees in every being that same Atman, and whoever sees everything in that Atman, he never goes far from that Atman. When all life and the whole universe are seen in this Atman, then alone man has attained the secret. There is no more delusion for him. Where is any more misery for him who sees this Oneness in the universe?

Courses on Scriptures

"Two ideals of truth are in our scriptures; the one is, what we call the eternal, and the other is not so authoritative, yet binding under particular circumstances, times, and places. The eternal relations which deal with the nature of the soul, and of God, and the relations between souls and God are embodied in what we call the Shrutis, the Vedas. The next set of truths is what we call the Smritis, as embodied in the words of Manu. Yâjnavalkya, and other writers and also in the Purânas, down to the Tantras. The second class of books and teachings is subordinate to the Shrutis, inasmuch as whenever any one of these contradicts anything in the Shrutis, the Shrutis must prevail. This is the law. The idea is that the framework of the destiny and goal of man has been all delineated in the Vedas, the details have been left to be worked out in the Smritis and Puranas. "

Taittiriya Upanisad

"The methods of attaining the end of religion are called Yoga by us, and the different forms of Yoga that we teach, are adapted to the different natures and temperaments of men. We classify them ..., under four heads ...These are all different roads leading to the same centre—God"

"Rama, the ancient idol of the heroic ages, the embodiment of truth, of morality, the ideal son, the ideal husband, the ideal father, and above all, the ideal king, ..You may exhaust the literature of the world that is past, and I may assure you that you will have to exhaust the literature of the world of the future, before finding another Sita. Sita is unique; that character was depicted once and for all. "

"The other Incarnations were but parts of the Lord. He, Krishna, was the Lord Himself." ...
